material culture exhibition Hiroshima

Aug - Nov

Atomicalia, a revised version of the Half Lives exhibition previously held at the Western Australian State Museum (Dec 2004 - Feb 2005), was installed as at the Hiroshima City University in August 2009 and at Space Pica for the Hiroshima Peace Film Festival during Oct-Nov 2009.

The display comprised large, colourful context panels and hundreds of nuclear era ‘everyday’ material culture items (food, apparel, utensils, crockery, jewellery, currency, stamps, etc.), including a selection of items specifically related to Japan and the atomic bombings.

Cold War, atomic-age material culture now has a collectable allure, and is often chosen for nostalgic or kitsch value.
